What do you like to do in your spare time? I think you’ll find below that it’s obvious that I really love to read. But where some of my friends, justifiably pick up a fiction novel to escape into, my passion is continuing my education and learning about the hidden, toxic dangers in the every day products we use. Through reading these books and many more, functional medicine books, seeing functional medicine doctors, and having many personal tests done, I’ve learned that the products in our everyday lives cause cancer, endocrine disorders, and infertility. As you can imagine, after reading these books I was angry. I’ve personally suffered from skin cancer, infertility, and endocrine disease and wondered:
Why I did I not know about this valuable health-saving information before?
Why didn’t I hear about the studies as they were coming out and published in the news and mainstream media? I trusted my products were safe. I thought that eating healthy and exercising meant that I would be/stay healthy. Why did I still struggle?
I now know study after study about toxic products are available for you and I to review. It simply never even occurred to me to look. The book Not Just a Pretty Face: The Ugly Side of the Beauty Industry documents how the movement to remove the toxic ingredients from our products was in full swing by the early 2000s. But in the United States, the beauty industry’s big business lobbied back hard. They shut down the movement to protect our health with their loud voices, sneaky deals, and deep pockets.
While the European Union has banned a list of 1,400 toxic ingredients deemed harmful to human health by scientists and medical professionals, the United States has banned a meager 30. Remember: many beauty companies are global in scale. Why is that important? The answer will blow your mind:
The same companies formulate their products WITHOUT 1,400 known toxic ingredients in the European Union, but not in the United States.
How is this ok? We should all be angry. In America, the backlash from big businesses shut down the movement to keep it’s own customers safe. Since then very little has been done to guard our citizens against these toxic ingredients.
This is why I am constantly grateful for companies like Beautycounter. Beautycounter promises not to formulate products with 1,800 harmful-to-our-health ingredients and rigorously tests components before and after formulation. They are truly leading the way for a new clean movement.
Not only does Beautycounter offer clean products but, because of Beautycounter’s advocacy work, one day the products you buy everywhere will also be safe. Until then, it is up to us to protect ourselves and our families by educating ourselves to the best of our abilities.
As promised, below is the list of books that I have read and found useful. Please feel free to message me if you have questions and join my Facebook Group: The Safer Solution to learn more and join the conversation.
